 Pangaea Newsletter - July 2013

Hello, everyone.

This is Yuki, a Pangaea Newsletter editor.
Beer tastes great in this season.
Summer will come very soon, and hot days, over 30 degrees continue here in
Kyoto.
But we all find some fun in summer days.
Especially, Kyoto in July will be very crowded with many people as we will have
Gion Festival, one of the three largest festivals in Japan.
Well, let’s enjoy hot summer days!
This month, we will deliver you variety of information from different locations.

Pangaea Ring brings you to a message from Koji Okuyama, who is currently
an intern at Pangaea Headquarter.
I also started my internship at Pangaea from May, and I do have many occasions
to meet him. Koji is very energetic and he takes good care to guide me various
tasks in the office and Kyoto University activities.

Please enjoy reading from Koji, my great Senpai (my senior.)

Big Smiles through the Webcam Activity
‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐
Hello,
I am Okuyama (Koji), currently doing an internship at Pangaea.
I attended the Webcam activity held at Kashiwanoha Elementary School in June for
the first time.
It was such a great opportunity for children to communicate with each other,
breaking the geographical and language barriers by the Internet.

Staffs in Korea were so lively and cheerful that we could start the activity
with a pleasant atmosphere. During the activity, I couldn’t help smiling at the
children when they were trying to write their name in Hangeul or when they were
trying so hard to come up with a hint for Nazoren(the word association game).
I was so surprised at the idea of a kid who came up with a hint, ”shortcake”
for the answer, ”strawberry” in my group.

For the first step in the webcam activity, the kids were to introduce themselves
to the Korean kids, who don’t understand Japanese, so they practiced using the
expression "Annyeonghaseyo. Nae ireum eun….yeyo. ('Hi, my name is…'
in Korean)" in advance.
They were so nervous in the beginning, but when they found that the Korean kids
understood them and called back their name in Korean, they had a big grin in the
face, which was so memorable.
This is one of the moments when I find this volunteering worthwhile.

After the activity, there was a girl who wrote that the Korean kids were very
lively and clever in her feedback. I assume this kid wanted to make friends with
them no matter what country or culture they are from. I would be so glad if this
experience leads to the motivation to communicate with someone regardless of a
country or culture, when she is grown up.

Facilitator Training at Honest Village (New Tokyo site)
‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐
Kyoto University site held Facilitator Training program in May.
Then Tokyo Honest Village had Facilitator training in June.
We had one university student and three people from various companies.
I heard that there is an excellent hamburger shop near Honest Village site.
How nice!

Webcam Activity between Kashiwanaha and Seoul
‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐‐
Since last January, this has been a while since we had Webcam.
We had Webcam activity between Kashiwanoha and Seoul.

August 24, Kenya, Kyoto and Seoul will be connected. It is 3-location activity.
Then on August 25, Kashiwanoha and Kenya will be connected. How exciting!
